During my meeting with Dr. Dodd, we discussed how to fit a proposed class into a college curriculum. One aspect that we should be cognizant of is the accreditation standards of the particular institution that the class is for. Essentially, classes need to fit into these standards in order to be considered. So, I've provided some links that provide the standards the College of Journalism and Communication at the University of Florida use but also the University of Florida General Education standards. If your class doesn't fit into the college, it might work better as a General Education course. Check out the links:

Thanks to Amy for providing info both in class today and in the blog about accreditation. This is an important factor in curriculum decisions for colleges, such as ours, that is accredited and wants to maintain accreditation.
As Amy explained, accreditation has an impact on many areas -- from the number of credits that a student can take in the college to the number of students in a computer lab class to the diversity of the faculty.
We also briefly discussed general education courses. This designation of courses exists at most large universities. At smaller colleges and programs, the general education curriculum would be the liberal arts program.
I served on UF's General Education Council for two years and reviewed more than 50 syllabi from faculty who wanted their courses to receive Gen Ed designation. The form for applying for this designation is posted at:
