Children's Machine
Book focus: “How does the relationship between children and computers affect learning?”
Understanding this will be crucial, Papert writes in the preface, to society’s ability to “shape the future.”
Technology revolution provides the reason and means to improve “learning environments.”
Schools, mired in teaching philosophy of late 19th and early 20th centuries, are at odds as they “impose single way of knowing on everyone.”
Alternative: cybernetic approach makes best use of “limited knowledge.”
Papert’s preferred approach to learning—constructionism. Built on idea that children learn best by finding the specific knowledge they need when they need it.
Goal: teach in a way that results in students learning the most they can by the least amount of formal teaching.
Uses practical applications, i.e. measuring when baking, working with LOGO computer programming language Papert developed, to teach concepts and thinking.
Suggests “The Knowledge Machine”—which would combine technology such as interactive video, E books, and virtual reality.
